What Meds Should Not Be Taken With CBD Oil?

by Neil / 26 October 2020 / Published in CBD Articles
Drugs

You may be surprised to learn that there are many CBD hemp oil drug interactions. Cannabidiol inhibits the CYP 450 liver enzyme system, meaning that it can influence various drugs’ metabolization.?

This CBD CYP 450 connection will guide your discretion when deciding what drugs should not be taken with CBD.

So, what meds should not be taken with CBD oil?

Here are the most dangerous contraindications:

  • Warfarin
  • Clobazam/Norclobazam
  • Etoposide/Teniposide

Each of these drugs is metabolised primarily by the CYP 450 enzymes. When CBD inhibits these liver cell enzymes, the drugs listed above are not cleared by the body as swiftly. Instead, these substances create a more substantial impact on the physiological system.

Warfarin is a blood thinner. When it builds up, it can lead to excessive bleeding remedied by the cessation of CBD administration.

Clobazam/Norclobazam are anti-epileptic medications. When they build up in the body, they actually cause epileptic symptoms.

Etoposide and teniposide are anti-cancer epipodophyllotoxin derivatives. As these two elements build up in the body, they can produce various side effects, including nausea, fatigue, bruising, hair loss, breathlessness, and a greater risk of infection.

If you are currently taking these medications, you must speak with a medical professional before administering CBD. Admittedly, if you are experiencing any troublesome symptoms, you should work with a qualified professional when adding in a new herbal supplement.

Common Substances Metabolised By The CYP 450 System

The substances metabolized by the CYP 450 system include fan favourites such as caffeine, acetaminophen, alcohol, and ibuprofen. Just because cyp 450 enzymes partially impact these elements does not mean that you cannot enjoy them while taking CBD.

However, when it comes to ingesting multiple active components, your mileage may vary. Everyone has a unique biochemical makeup. When numerous substances impacting metabolic pathways show up on the scene, individual results become less predictable.

Always monitor your progress when working with an herbal regimen. Try and lean into your new holistic alternative instead of NSAIDs and other over-the-counter products known to express hepatotoxic (liver-damaging) activity. CBD could potentially raise the impact of these common drugs, leading to no subjective differences while forcing the body to work harder to clear them, creating excessive wear and tear.

This could be anticipated and negated by taking one half to three-quarters of the other products’ dosage that you are already enjoying. Then see if you can thrive effectively with these new adjustments. With the introduction of a new holistic regimen, you may begin to see less of a need for older, over the counter self-care products.

Still enjoy that cup of coffee or tea, though. There’s no need to part with that sweet caffeine fix unless otherwise directed by a medical professional.

If you have any concerns, feel free to do more research and speak with a medical professional. Note that just because the same network metabolizes two substances does not indicate a troublesome crossover. Even inhibition and induction of 450 enzymes will not always cause trouble when combined with other drugs handled by these hepatic agents.

Know your body, work with your practitioner, and learn to navigate the use of herbal products alongside your prescription solutions.

CBD and Sedatives

CBD is noted to have a slightly calming effect on some consumers. This has not been traced back to a biological source, although the human endocannabinoid system impacts mood and energy. This endocannabinoid network interacts closely with cannabis compounds, like CBD, THC, CBC, CBN, etc.

CBD’s relaxing effect is likely to stack with sedative products but not to synergize with them. Stacking implies that CBD’s minor impact would simply be served along with the sedative’s psychoactive effects in question.

Synergy would imply that CBD would multiply the intoxicating effects of these substances. Luckily this is not the case. Enjoying a nightcap after taking your regular CBD dose will likely cause no additional impact.

However, some of these common pharmaceutical or OTC sedatives are metabolized by the CYP 450 system. These include:

  • Alcohol
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Barbiturates
  • Gabapentin
  • Opiates

CBD’s inhibition of these enzymes may create unpredictable results when combined with these substances. Your mileage may vary. There are no undocumented contraindicated effects of combining these substances, but do be aware of the possibility of enhanced drowsiness and side effects.

Holistic Adjuncts

CBD can complement rather than conflict with the standard approach to health and wellness. In most instances, a knowledgeable professional can integrate CBD safely into your daily routine. This integration can improve quality of life, allowing you to thrive truly.
