Why Has My CBD Changed Colour?

by Neil Mumby / 24 October 2020 / Published in CBD Articles
CBD Changed Colour

Cannabidiol tinctures can change colours for a variety of reasons. Luckily, these colour changes are not associated with the degradation of the product in question.

CBD oils can shift colours, usually resulting in black CBD oil or CBD oil turned pink. The brown coloration of these oils is also quite common.

These colour changes occur due to basic chemical reactions. When exposed to factors such as heat and light, the plant compounds in your oil can adjust, resulting in a new appearance.

What Colour Is CBD Oil Supposed To Be?

Okay, so you’ve picked up your first bottle, you crack it open, and the tincture is not quite the colour you anticipated. Perhaps you were expecting something colourless, or maybe you imagined a more earthy appearance. Either way, it’s reasonable to be asking, “What colour is CBD oil, anyway?”

Honestly, CBD oils can arrive in a variety of colours and consistencies. Black, brown, pink, gold, and clear tinctures are the most common. These will each indicate a unique spectrum of hemp compounds, which influences the colour of the oil.

As mentioned above, don’t be surprised if the tincture changes colour. Cannabidiol tinctures have a shelf life of one to two years, regardless of the colour changes you may observe. So long as the product remains out of excess heat and avoids direct sunlight for extended periods, you can trust that it will stay active and pure.

Can CBD Oil Be Clear in Colour?

100%. Clear CBD usually indicates a highly refined and pure product. Our cannabidiol tinctures retain a clear appearance due to the MCT oil used to suspend our premium CBD. This MCT has a translucent appearance that remains even when infused with cannabidiol.

The extraction process used to procure our CBD removes additional plant compounds, including chlorophyll and all lipids. This results in a very mild flavour and an appealing consistency. These items retain low amounts of unnecessary plant material while providing concentrated, bioactive hemp compounds.

Our oils are among the varieties that will turn pink after exposure to light. One plant compound that remains in these pure oils, named polyphenol oxidase, gives off a slightly pink appearance when introduced to oxygen and light. Even when these oils are sealed and stored in a dark place, opening them regularly will likely change the colour of these items.

The nutritional and holistic value of these tinctures will remain unaffected by this chemical reaction. This polyphenol oxidase is an organic compound that naturally occurs in hemp and a wide variety of edible plant products.

Why Is My CBD Oil Turning Brown and Black?

On the flip side of things, cannabidiol tinctures have also been known to turn brownish-black. This colour change is also not an indicator of spoilage. When exposed to heat, sunlight, and long shelf times, these cannabidiol oils will slowly darken as a natural response to the environment.

Many full-spectrum and broad-spectrum products retain a much darker and earthier quality. This may not be pronounced when first receiving the product, but the colour can shift when stored for more extended periods. Also, note that not all broad-spectrum items maintain this brown colour.

When fresh oil turns brown, don’t be concerned. Instead, it is safe to assume that this product is simply filled with additional hemp compounds that are meant to support the endocannabinoid network.

Storing Your Cannabidiol Products

While these chemical shifts are harmless, the same stimulus that causes them could help speed up your product’s aging. CBD tinctures are best stored in a cool dark place. Refrigeration is an excellent choice to promote the longevity and cleanliness of your oils.

If you are using one bottle over an extended period, it is best to ensure that the bottle cap, opening, and dropper remain clean. Rinsing the dropper and lid with warm water and a dash of soap once a week should keep them pristine. Simply wiping the bottle’s rim with a wet cloth and regularly flushing the dropper should take care of the rest.

The only time you will need to consider ditching your CBD product is if off-putting brownish lumps are forming on the inside of the bottle. This is not common and usually indicates the build-up of bacteria over an extended period of neglect.
